Job Title: Technical Author (Contract)

Position: Contract 12 Months - 6th Jan start (may consider Permanent )

Location: Clevedon Nr Bristol

Rate/Salary: £19 – 24 per hour PAYE equivalent to Circa £42k pa

An A/D backlog accumulated through 2012/2013 with additional workload planned through Q3/Q4 2013 and onwards. The Technical Publications department capacity is not currently available to support the publication requirement for A/D workload.

Summary:

To write, produce and accurately maintain instructions, installation manuals, and associated amendments/addendums, including those for non-standard products, to the highest quality and standard for the company EMS, standard and non-standard abatement and related products, in accordance with the house style, on time and within the Operations Budget.

Skills:

Creation and production of technical manuals, including but not limited to instruction, Installation and addendums.

Assess each document task requirement - a good electromechanical understanding is prerequisite. The role requires proactive collaboration with peers and cross functional teams, to extract raw data as required completing the task. Interpret Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) to support written technical content and descriptive text.

The ability to suggest meaningful illustrations to substitute for extensive text is a requisite. Create and write technical documentation using Adobe Frame Maker 9/10/11 in unstructured mode using a supplied template. Extract views from CAD drawings using AutoCAD Lite, for use in documentation. Produce and supply rough illustration graphic mark-ups to enable an illustrator to create formal illustrations for manual inclusion following the company house style and processes.

Structure and layout all documents to the required in-house document standard. Follow the company in-house quality process as instructed by Senior Technical Author. Ensure that all documents follow the in-house review and technical approval process and signoff prior to formal release.

Good presentation skills to communicate effectively with a wide range of people from various disciplines and levels of seniority. Diplomatic in working with staff at all levels; understanding their commercial priorities. Must be methodical and logical, show attention to detail and demonstrate the ability to work using own initiative.

Write weekly reports for senior technical author for information cascade and management tracking purposes. Use Microsoft Outlook 2010 email software and Microsoft Communicator software to communicate to project groups and peers.

Good experience and use of the following software packages:

Qualifications/Education/Certifications:

Qualified to degree or HNC/HND in mechanical or electromechanical engineering; appropriate time severed apprenticeships or forces experience will be considered.

Experience:

Five years technical authoring experience in an engineering environment either employed by an engineering company or an agency.

Functional Competencies:

Production of various manuals and addendums as directed by production/engineer/author peers.

Check all work complies with given publication standards.

Carry out editorial and proofing checks.

Carry out peer reviews.

Research information obtained from internal design/project documentation.

To ensure that all user documentation conforms to Edwards standards for technical documentation.

To identify areas of the documentation for improvement and recommend to department peers such corrective action, as necessary.

To ensure a consistent presentation across all build note and standard operating procedures.
