Thermal design. Power electronics development. Standards compliance work (for electrical safety and for EMC)

Take existing motor drive designs and apply these to new pump platforms. This will require identification of shortcomings, and implementations of necessary design improvements in the power electronics and possibly in the cooling arrangement to meet the application requirements. The motor drives operate from 200V and 400V, 3 phase electrical supplies, controlling induction motors with power ratings around 2kW.

Hardware Development for 200V-460V 3ph / 2.2kW commercial pump involving design verification, analysis and development of a 3ph BLDC motor drive and associated electronics. Hardware is a mixture of small signal analogue/digital electronics and power electronics. PSPICE and Excel modelling along with schematic capture in Allegro.  System Integration Testing i.e. testing hardware function and testing interaction of hardware and software.  Prototype Design, building and testing.  Verification of design to in-house standards/specifications and improvement/ development to achieve required specification goals and also compliance with applicable external standards EN61010-1, EN61326, UL840 and EN61800-2.

Working alongside other electronics engineers and other engineering functions such as software, mechanical and production engineers and PCB designers to develop motor drive electronics.  Documentation of electronics including Design and Component Specifications, Design Analysis and Test Documentation for motor drive electronics.

Power electronics and analogue circuit design and analysis, including signal conditioning and conversion. Familiarity with motor control methods for induction motors and synchronous permanent magnet motors.  Design for manufacture and test and/or some thermal management and/or control systems and/or embedded software experience would be an advantage. Ability to design and work safely with three-phase mains voltage protection and control components.

A minimum of five years electrical and electronic design experience, including a proven track record of working with single and three phase supplied designs up to 460Vac. Electrical and/or electronic engineering degree (e.g. BSc BEng, MEng) strongly preferred. An equivalent level engineering or science degree would be considered

Broad activities:

Requirements analysis. Concept proposals and selection. Detailed electrical and electronic design. Verification and validation against functional requirements and national/international standards. Production and field problem investigation and solving. Value engineering and cost reduction support.
